Golfers take third twice, win one
Consistency and depth white light for golfers

For the Saline varsity girls' golf team, it was looking to be a rebuilding year. But a third-place finish Aug. 18 in the Bedford Invitational, a painless win against Lincoln the following day, and a third-place finish at the Chelsea Invitational Aug. 21 show that may not be the whole truth.

The team shot a 359 Aug. 18 at Bedford Hills Golf Club to finish third out of a field of 17 teams.
Leading the pack was sophomore Shannon Fraser. She paced the Hornets with a score of 85, earning her a tie for seventh individually.
Freshman Karla Gross found similar success with a score of 86. This earned her a top ten finish, as well, with a tie for ninth out of the field of almost 100 golfers.
Finishing out the scoring was sophomore Kristen Areddy with a 91 and senior Emily Hysong with a 97.
With so many underclassmen, and the graduation of leaders Sarah Hoffman and Bethany French, coach Betsy French was happy with the tournament results.
"I am very pleased with the team's play in our first stroke play tournament," she said. "There were many good teams, and the girls were very competitive. To place two players in the top 10 was quite an accomplishment for our young team."
The Saline players didn't ease up. They sacked Lincoln handedly Aug. 19, shooting 183 to Lincoln's 218.
This time it was Gross who led her team to victory with a 44, followed closely by Fraser with a 45, and Hyson and Areddy each with a 47. Even junior Megan Geiger, whose score was not needed, stayed tight to the leader with a 49.
This left French equally pleased and optimistic.
"Having five players in the 40s bodes well for the season," she said. "I am seeing improvement in course management and short game which will be the keys as the season progresses."
The Chelsea Invitational that same week was another repeat of success. The Hornets shot a 361 at Reddeman Farms Golf Club to finish third out of 17 teams.
Hysong had the lowest score for Saline, starting her round with a birdie on the difficult eighth hole and finishing it with an 85.
Her teammates also did well. Gross carded an 88 with a birdie on the 18th hole, Areddy shot a 90 and Fraser posted a 98.
Once again, French saw this as a positive sign.
"We've had three different team medalists in the last three competitions," she said. "It's a pleasant surprise to see that our low player can come from any of the top four players."
