Three Republicans fought a very close battle Tuesday for a chance to meet incumbent Democrat Kathy Angerer in November to represent the 55th District in the Michigan House of Representatives.

Frank Moynihan of Milan was the top vote-getter in the Republican primary, grabbing 879. Opponents Ken DeVee and Paul Jensen garnered 773 and 820, respectively, according to unofficial election results.
"My heart goes out to Mr. Ken DeVee. He ran a race that suggests to me that he, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, will be back," Moynihan said yesterday morning. "...while Kathy Angerer drew 6,335 supporting ballots, my own draw was 879. This data sort of makes me feel like I won a seat in the electric chair."
Moynihan, 63, is a retired real estate professional who moved to Milan from the Chicago area in 1996. He said he felt guilty that he wasn't doing anything to change the political and economic environment, and so decided to run for office. He believes in lower taxes and smaller government, adding that the experience of running for office has confirmed his thought that reducing government is a "difficult task."
The district covers western Monroe County, Milan, Saline and York townships, and is considered a swing seat by political observers.
Low voter turnout throughout Saline and Milan precincts reflected the trend countywide where just over 16 percent cast ballots.
Angerer is bidding for a third term as state representative for the 55th District and is currently the assistant majority floor leader. She ran unchallenged in Tuesday's primary as the Democratic nominee.
